SKYE BANK MANAGEMENT SACKED BY CBN

The management of Skye Bank PLC announced what it called the voluntary resignation of its top officers. The action followed plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take over the bank due to distress arising from bad loans and insider malpractices by board members.

In a statement, the management said the CBN has approved the appointment of Alhaji M.K Ahmad as the new Chairman of the Board, and Tokunbo Abiru the new Group Managing Director and CEO. Bayo Sanni, Idris Yakubu, Markie Idowu and Abimbola Izu retain their positions as Executive Directors.

SaharaReporters learnt that the Chairman of the bank, Tunde Ayeni owed the bank at least N102 billion that had remained unpaid for several years. He was one of those who resigned.

Mr. Ayeni, who is a close associate of former President Goodluck Jonathan, had taken over what used to be Eko Bank, Bond Bank, and Prudent Bank. He then used interbank loans to buy Mainstreet Bank for N135 billion and added it to his collection to create Skye Bank.

Since coming on stream, however, the bank has been consistently abused by its owners, who collect loans without collateral, and use them to fund lavish lifestyles and the acquisition of an assortment of private companies. Ayeni, for example, bought parts of an unbundled electricity company from what used to be the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, using Skye Bank funds. At the last count, he also owned Ibadan and Yola Discos, and also acquired Nigeria Telecommunication Limited (NITEL) and also owned a private jet.

Mr. Ayeni was also a close associate of the late former governor of Bayelsa, Diepreye Solomon Alamieyeseigha, and was linked with money laundering allegations concerning the late governor. It was through Alamieyeseigha that he became close to Mr. Jonathan during his time as deputy governor. Ayeni spent months in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission detention as the agency carried out investigations into the massive theft of Bayelsa State funds, but he was never charged to court.

Other non-executive directors of the bank who owed the bank include Jason Fadeyi, the chairman of Pan Ocean Oil company, who owes N90billion.

Furthermore, several businesses with links to the bank owed large sums to it but refused to service their loans. They include Atlantic Energy, owned by Jide Omokore and fugitive Kola Aluko, which is owing N70b; Oando Oil Company, N20b; and Captain Osa Okunbo. Kola Aluko’s brother, Kunle, is among the non-executive directors who purportedly resigned from the bank’s board.

SaharaReporters sources said Heritage Bank, which is co-owned by Mr. Ayeni and Senate President Bukola Saraki, is next in line for a takeover by the Central Bank, which is also looking to force out Oba Otudeko from the board of First Bank of Nigeria due to his indebtedness of about N82billion.

In his letter of resignation, outgoing MD of Skye Bank, Timothy Ogunoye lamented that his efforts to turn the fortune of the bank was thwarted by forces within and without the bank.

Below is the press release announcing a change of guard at the bank .

Changes on the Board of Skye Bank Plc.

We wish to inform our stakeholders of recent changes on the Board of the Bank.
Earlier, the Non-Executive Directors and the two Independent Non-Executive Directors resigned their appointment on the Board as follows:

S/N DIRECTORS CAPACITY
1 Dr. Olatunde Ayeni Non-Executive Director/Chairman
2 Mr. Victor Adenigbagbe Non-Executive Director
3 Dr. Jason Fadeyi Non-Executive Director
4 Mr. Babajide Agbabiaka Non-Executive Director
5 Mr. Victor Odozi Independent Non-Executive Director
6 Mr. Kunle Aluko Non-Executive Director
7 Mr. Abdul Bello Non-Executive Director
8 Mrs. Ammuna Lawan Ali Independent Non-Executive Director

The following Executive Directors also resigned their appointments on the Board with immediate effect:

S/N DIRECTORS CAPACITY
1 Mr. Timothy Oguntayo Group Managing Director/CEO
2 Mrs. Amaka Onwughalu Deputy Managing Director
3 Mr. Dotun Adeniyi Executive Director
4 Mrs. Ibiye Ekong Executive Director

The CBN has approved the appointment of Alhaji M.K Ahmad as the new Chairman of the Board, while Mr. Tokunbo Abiru has been appointed as the new Group Managing Director and CEO. Messrs. Bayo Sanni, Idris Yakubu, Markie Idowu and Abimbola Izu will continue in office as Executive Directors of the Bank.

The former leadership of the Bank voluntarily resigned their positions in order to pave the way for a new team to further the new strategic direction of the Bank in the retail and commercial business space, having laid the foundations and set the necessary processes and structures. In this wise, the challenge of accelerating growth in the new strategic direction becomes more urgent and compelling, given the poor performance that we recorded in the 2015 financial year end, and the attendant challenges.

The Executive Management of the Bank also take the opportunity to most sincerely thank the former Board led by Dr. Olatunde Ayeni, and the former Management team led by Mr. Timothy Oguntayo for their service, sacrifice and dedication to this institution.

As they take their leave, we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

NEW JAMB POINTS SYSTEM FOR 2016 ADMISSION PROCESS-CHECK HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR POINTS HERE

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process.

The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators in the country.

According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system.

While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission.

According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates.

“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said.

The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate.

The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”

The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission this year.

“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained.

Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.

For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.

JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon.

JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test.

JAMB also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.

JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks.

“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.

I'm a better coach because of Jose Mourinho's rivalry - Pep Guardiola says

Pep Guardiola has given his first press conference as Manchester City boss. While speaking to the press, the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach admitted that his rivalry with Jose Mourinho while the pair were at Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively has made him a better manager.
Barca were the subject of regular Mourinho barbs, and the nadir came when the Portuguese poked Guardiola's assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye during a touchline scuffle in August 2011.

"I think Jose put it pretty well in his press conference," City's new head coach said. "It's not about him or about me.

"We played many times against each other, and I can only say as a coach that the big coaches - and Jose is of course one of them - help me to reach another level as a coach.

"My experience against him and against, for example, Jurgen Klopp or Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and a lot of managers in England and Spain - it made me better.

"All managers in the world want to win and here they're going to try to win as well."

“Every stage is a big challenge,” he said. “It could be the biggest because City have not won as many titles as Barcelona or Bayern but I can’t answer. Maybe when you took over the second team from Barcelona [in 2007] it was the hardest because if I failed in that moment my career would be finished.

“We have to win every day. I see how difficult it is in England to find a team to win four, five, six games in a row. All the people talk about that. Maybe that is the challenge, to try to be more consistent in our game, but I think in my career people are always going to demand [success of] my teams … but in the end that is good. It is better to live under that pressure so I think you have to understand, maybe we will not be able to win, maybe we will not win every day but we are going to try and that is the important thing to change in our play.”

LEICESTER COMPLETES AHMED MUSA SIGNING

Premier league champions Leicester City have completed the signing of Nigerian international Ahmed Musa on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Leicester were widely linked with the forward who scored 13 goals in 30 league games last season for CSKA Moscow and they had a January bid for the player rebuffed.

The 23-year old Musa becomes Leicester's fourth signing of the summer following the addition of Nampalys Mendy, Ron-Robert Zieler and Luis Hernandez.

Musa had this to say about his latest move,

"I feel very happy joining Leicester City, for me it's one of the best clubs and I feel very happy.

"I joined because it's one of the best clubs in the Premier League and they are like a family. That's why I joined Leicester City and I'm very excited.

"I look forward to seeing the fans in the new season and I will do my best to make them happy."
